About the Show

Cheaper by the Dozen

Cheaper by the Dozen is a fast-paced, funny, and heartfelt story based on the real-life Gilbreth family. At the center is Frank Gilbreth, an eccentric and brilliant pioneer of industrial efficiency, who runs his household of twelve children with the same logic and order he brings to the workplace. Determined to save time and maximize productivity, Frank applies his unorthodox methods to everything from household chores to morning routines—often to the embarrassment of his children. His systems are bizarre, clever, and surprisingly effective, but not always easy to live with. As the family tries to keep up, the play explores the balance between structure and spontaneity, discipline and love—all with humor and heart.

There are several versions of Cheaper by the Dozen out there—including a musical and the well-known Steve Martin movie—but our production is not a musical and is not based on the 2003 film. Instead, we’ll be performing the classic stage play adapted from the original 1948 book by Frank B. Gilbreth Jr. and Ernestine Gilbreth Carey.

Meet the Crew

  • Connie Kiehn

    DIRECTOR

Connie is excited to take on her second show as director withHoney Pearl Productions. Cheaper by the Dozen will challenge her to dig even deeper with her cast, as the show leans less on elaborate costumes and sets and more on honest, character-driven storytelling. Her best ideas come in the shower, in the car or on a run. Connie’s favorite musical is How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.

  • Stefan Kiehn

    SET DIRECTOR

Stefan recently explored the world of stage puppet-making, but he’s excited to switch gears and take on set design for this production. He’s especially looking forward to the unique challenge of building a set on a scale that audiences aren’t used to seeing in community theatre. For Stefan, the key to creative success is simply starting—diving in and seeing where the process leads. His favorite musical is Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory.

  • Chris Jones

    SET DESIGNER

Chris has been in sales for 30 years but secretly wants to be an interior designer. He is a family man through and through and it means everything to Chris. Moulin Rouge is his favorite musical.

  • Joe Friedman

    SET DESIGNER

Joe is a man with a diverse work history and many talents. He’s most looking forward to the fellowship that comes with building a work of art from the ground up—from the first steps of set design and construction to the final details that bring the vision to life. Some of his favorite musicals come from the movies La La Land, Hercules, and Team America: World Police.

  • Myriah Bell

    STAGE MANAGER

What excites Myriah most about Cheaper by the Dozen is the opportunity to work with the crew and help expand it. To get her creative juices flowing, she listens to soundtracks and curates Pinterest boards for whatever project she’s working on. When she’s not involved in theatre, you can find Myriah working one of her many jobs or hiking the Selkirks. Her favorite musical is a toss-up between Bandstand and Parade.

  • Charlotte Young

    ASSISTANT STAGE MANAGER

Charlotte is especially excited about the set for Cheaper by the Dozen, which she believes may be the largest one she’s seen at a community theater. She’s looking forward to watching it come together—and being a part of making it happen. To get her creative energy flowing, Charlotte likes to sit in a dark room and listen to music with strong drums. And when inspiration doesn’t strike right away, she simply starts with the bare minimum and lets the process lead the way. Her current favorite musical is Little Shop of Horrors.

  • Judy Morgan

    PROP MISTRESS

Judy recently assisted with set design for The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, creating two standout pieces: the wardrobe and the sleigh. For this production, she’s switching it up and bringing her creativity to the world of prop design. Her favorite musical is the original movie version of Thoroughly Modern Millie, and she believes Fiddler on the Roof is one of the most beautiful musicals ever made.

  • Sarah Anne Morgan

    LIGHT DESIGNER

Sarah studied music and opera in college, with opportunities to continue her studies in Germany and Switzerland. What excites her most about Cheaper by the Dozen is seeing so many people stepping outside their usual roles to try something new. To get her creative juices flowing, Sarah likes to study the show and her role in the production, then look at past interpretations to decide where to take inspiration and where to carve out something fresh. Her favorite musicals include Sweeney Todd, Into the Woods…anything by Stephen Sondheim.

  • Vicki Turnbull

    COSTUME MISTRESS

Vicki is especially excited that Cheaper by the Dozen is set in the 1920s—one of her favorite eras. She loves the clothing, makeup, and Art Deco aesthetics of the time, describing them as classy, stylish, and vibrant. While she expects it will be a challenge to costume an entire family in period-appropriate looks, she’s also looking forward to the fun and creativity of it. Vicki often gets her best ideas while trying to fall asleep or in the shower. Her favorite musical since childhood has always been Victor/Victoria.

  • Rochelle Hendricks

    STAGE CREW

Rochelle shined as a costumer for The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, and she’s switching it up this show by joining the stage crew. She’s excited to explore the dynamics of a large family unit in Cheaper by the Dozen—particularly how each individual falls into a role like hero, mediator, black sheep, or rescuer, and how those roles evolve over time. When working on creative projects, Rochelle draws inspiration from YouTube concepts, time spent in nature, and the sounds of Classic Rock. One of her favorite classic musicals is The Wizard of Oz.

  • Daniel Fuller

    STAGE CREW

Daniel is excited to work on Cheaper by the Dozen because he enjoys the technical side of theatre. He previously ran lights for The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe and is looking forward to learning about sound design. Outside of theatre, Daniel has a strong interest in technology—he helps his family with tech at home and enjoys experimenting with computers and creating apps.Daniel’s favorite musicals are The Sound of Music and Fiddler on the Roof.
